Don't Risk My Rights. Stand Up Not Stand Down

I just left an event The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club hosted for Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton; and was again reminded why the LGBT community and the progressive community broadly suffers from the call of groups like Get Equal for donors and activists to stand down this election cycle.

While we have passed marriage equality in the District of Columbia, because of our lack of voting representation and lack of legislative and budget autonomy, we are subject to the tyrannical rule of the congress of the United States.

We are very blessed to have a Delegate to Congress, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who is a steadfast ally and advocate for our community. However because of the continued disenfranchisement of the District, she cannot protect our rights and the rights of the 600,000 residents of the District of Columbia alone.

We are reliant on our brothers and sister in the states sending Representatives to Capitol Hill she can work with and who understand our fight in the District.

So for those that call on LGBT donors and activists to stand down in this election cycle, know that you are doing so on the backs of the 600,000 DC residents and your LGBT brothers and sister in the District who fought long and hard for 40 years to achieve marriage equality in the nations capitol.

Are LGBT donors and privileged activists that self observed that they are willing to risk losing our rights in order to make a point?

Again, fight the fight and challenge the Democratic party to stand by our promises, but don't do it at the risk of losing the rights we have fought so hard for in the District of Columbia.

I ask you to join me in asking Get Equal to stand down on their call to do nothing to prevent the election of a congress that would attempt to end marriage equality in the District of Columbia.

Let's get real and then hopefully we can get equal.
