Inspired by the living legacy of Cliff Roberson

I must first say that while I did not know Cliff Roberson personally, I knew his smile from his presence in the community.

Reflecting on the remarks made at his homegoing service today, I was reminded of the living legacy of activism and love of community that has defined the modern history of the District of Columbia.

See, the real DC, that so many have no knowledge of, is one where community and family means everything. Where people have stood together to fight for home rule and ending congressional intervention.

Where people have endoured political battles and been able to find common ground on core issues that affect us all.

Where teachers and community leaders have fed and clothed children in the community whose families were unable to meet their basic needs.

This is the real DC that Cliff Roberson loved so dearly.

Yes, we have had and continue to have serious challenges to address, as every city and state, but one thing is certain those of us that call ourselves Washingtonians, by birth or by spirit, love this great city and are committed to fighting hard to continue to have it be an amazing place to live and build family.

Cliff, thank you for your presence, your life, and your spirit. Your legacy will live on!
